Literature Review

The purpose of this chapter is two fold, firstly exploring the issue of social spaces, and what they actually are and why they should be focused on.  Secondly, it is to uncover and establish the key design principles to undertand how a social space actually manifest themselves in built form and what makes a successful social space.

 

There is a subsequent work concerning Biophilic Cities in addition to the idea of social spaces, while seperate it is relatable in terms of creating comfortable with regards to scale, and simply being pleasant and enjoyable to stay in. Furthermore it helps justify the argument for intensification and high density compact cities and is a key part of the idea of sustainably lifestyles.

 

These principles are taken and turned into a design framework to influence the final masterplans of this project concerning Milton Keynes and a means of judging various case studies.

 

 

The Social Life of Small Urban Places is the result of several years worth of research from the "Street Life Project" In New York between 1969 and 1975.

Cities for People is a recent addition in the long list of Jan Gehls published works concerning the creation and use of social streets and public spaces.

Biophilic Cities is the work of Timmothy Beatley, arguing that cities can and must be designed to permit daily contact with the natural world. His other works have argues for the need of sustainable and resilient cities  and communities.
