Case Studies
Introduction
This section will use the evaluative framework that has previously been developed to analyse several case studies to gain further knowledge about the practical design solutions for increasing social activity in streets. Using the ’indicator’ questions from the framework the case studies can be assessed albiet quite generally as to what extent they address the qualities listed in the framework. Each study is given a score out of five, one being the lowest, and five being the highest to judge how well the space meets the spatial qualities.
The case studies are there to demonstrate key concepts, techniques and the development of best practice ideas,
that can then be incorporated into future designs. At the end of the section key ideas will be highlighted that will contribute to the further development and detailing of design actions for the evaluative framework for social streets. It should be worth noted that not all of the case studies will be assessed, only those which are listed under social spaces will be actually assessed, the others are there to illustrate possible innovative and creative ideas and techniques rather than whether they actually work as places.
